1997 Lindemans Hunter Valley Shiraz

At first sight, the Hunter Valley would appear to be an improbable place to grow vines. Its challenging terrain and climate make it a difficult place to cultivate vines. However, Lindemans has long recognised the potential of the region's rich volcanic soils. In fact, Dr Henry J Lindeman first planted his vines in this region in 1843. He persisted with his vision to create classic, long lasting wines that were representative of the region.

Today, the Lindemans Hunter Valley range of wines enjoy a reputation as some of Australia's most distinctive wines.

Two of the region's most distinguished varietals ?Semillon and Shiraz - continue to thrive in the regions difficult conditions. Over the years, our winemakers have turned the making of these celebrated styles into a fine art.

Vineyard Region: Hunter Valley, New South Wales

Vintage Conditions: Budburst was uneven, but very good berry set and bunch numbers suggested an above average crop for the Hunter Valley. Useful follow-up rain ensured that the area would have the best start for many years. The weather turned fine later in the vintage and the Shiraz grapes were of optimum quality.

Grape Variety: Shiraz

Maturation: Matured in a combination of new, one and two-year old French oak barrels for a period of 12 months.

Winemaker Greg Clayfield's Comments:

Colour: Medium brick red.

Nose: Typical Hunter characters on the nose of earthy, leathery, rustic fruit with some cinnamon spice, stone fruits and subtle savoury oak overtones.

Palate: Medium-bodied, generous, soft and round middle palate with sweet plum and chocolate-like fruit flavours. The subtle oak is integrated with obvious but well-balanced tannins on the finish.

Serving and Cellaring Suggestions: This is a distinctive and unique Australian Shiraz style. A traditional Lindemans Hunter Valley-style Shiraz, presently drinking very well but like previous vintages of this style, will continue to age for many years in the bottle under good cellaring conditions. It is ideal with darker style meat such as Duck and Beef.

Wine Analysis:

Alc/Vol: 13.0%
